EU Bans Ukrainian Poultry Imports Amid Avian Flu Outbreak

Ukraine’s food safety watchdog announced on Tuesday that the EU has banned all poultry imports from the country, following the discovery of avian flu at non-commercial farms.

The ban is in place for an indeterminate period, as there is no telling as yet how long it will take to clear the affected farms of the illness. Discovered in early December, the outbreak is the first of its kind in Ukraine since as far back as 2008. It was found at farms in the region of Kherson, southern Ukraine.

Considering the fact that Ukraine exported approximately 32,000 tonnes of poultry into the EU between January and October, a figure which rises by around 20% year-on-year, the scope of this outbreak could be massive if it cannot be nipped in the bud. Although no human illnesses have yet been reported as a result of the avian flu outbreak, the authorities responsible are correct to show caution, and preemptively block the supply of affected products.

Ukraine itself had to block poultry imports from certain regions of Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary and Austria back in November, also due to concerns over avian flu. It is not yet known whether the disease was carried into Kherson via imported products from these regions, or whether Ukraine is in fact the source. Neighbouring country Belarus was forced to implement similar bans at the time.
